It was one of those days where I just fancied a cupcake. In fact I had walked past The Cupcake Cafe on the main street several times during the first few days I was in Phnom Penh and I just couldn’t get them out of my mind. Eventualy after thinking ‘screw it I’m on holiday’ I gave into temptation and went in to get my cupcake. My friends and I were deciding on which we would choose (they all looked so delicious) when I noticed there was a man hovering over us as we were about to order, looking at us as if trying to say something. Just as we had made our selection he approached us with a rather unusual proposition. Unusual, but very sweet and very romantic.
He explained to us that he was travelling for some time for work and that he was away from his girlfriend for her birthday. He said that he will buy us our cupcakes if we would hold our cake and say Happy Birthday in a video he was making. He had a couple of different signs that read ‘Happy Birthday’ in different languages that we’d hold up too. And of course we did it. Afterall who doesn’t love a free cupcake and even better it was for love! But I’m a bit of a softie and would have done it regardless of my reward.
After he filmed us sending our birthday wishes to his girlfriend he told us he had been at The Cupcake Cafe for a while, buying cupcakes for people if they would appear in his video. I loved that I got to be a part of making someone smile. I wish I could see that video. It was such a memorable and all round warm-hearted, fuzzy-feeling experience that I was so happy to be a part of.
I’m glad I went in for that cupcake.
